General Information

The information below is most of what you'll need to know about the Running Rebels.

Note that EVENT CANCELLATION INFORMATION is always posted on the home page.

Practices

Practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-7:00pm and Saturdays from 9:00-11:00am until meets begin-(some coaches begin their practices at different times, please check with your individual coach).

What to Wear: running shorts, tee shirt, and running shoes. Sweats or a jacket and long pants are strongly recommended at all practices and meets, as it tends to get cold quickly. Please carry all your track items in a sports bag and also MARK ALL SWEATS, JACKETS, PANTS, WATER BOTTLES etc. with your athlete's name. Always bring a water bottle, with your athlete's name written on it. Please be sure to have your athlete throw away or bring home their water bottle at the end of each practice. Boys should wear an athletic supporter or jockey-type underwear. Please use the bathroom at home before track practice, as there are no open ones at Royal HS, Monday through Friday.

Shoes: good running shoes are a must; Foot Pursuit (in Simi Valley) will give you a 10% discount on shoes. Spikes may not be worn by Gremlins and are not a necessity for all athletes (check with your coach).

Uniforms: will be given to your child before the first meet. The uniforms are yours to keep at the end of the season.

Events
Each athlete may only compete in four events (one must be a relay) at any one track meet. Gremlins may only participate in 3 events.

What is great about running track is that when multiple heats are held for an event (100m is the classic example), the children are placed into the heats based on their best times so that they are always competing against others of their approximate abilities. That way, most kids over the season will win heats or come close to it. At least the chance is there since they improve their times and distances from week to week.

THE TIMES LISTED ARE A ROUGH ESTIMATE. ACTUAL TIMES MAY VARY GREATLY
Track meets begin at 8:30am, so everyone should get there in plenty of time to warm up, receive event tags and otherwise get ready (each coach will give you specifics). It is difficult to estimate times for the various events during the day because they always vary week to week. At our first meet, you should get an idea of how they run.
Field events begin at 8:30 and run concurrently:

HIGH JUMPLONG JUMPSHOT PUT
Bantam Girls Gremlin Girls Youth Boys
Bantam Boys Gremlin Boys Youth Girls
Midget Girls Intermediate Boys Intermediate Girls
Midget Boys Intermediate Girls Intermediate Boys
Youth Girls Midget Girls Bantam Girls
Youth Boys Midget Boys Bantam Boys
Intermediate Girls Youth Girls Bantam Girls

Most stadiums have multiple pits and will have girls and boys compete concurrently for a particular event and age group (e.g., Gremlin boys and girls will compete at the same time in two different pits). Track events begin at 8:45am. The order of competition is nearly always the youngest age group to the oldest, girls before boys. In the longer races - 800m, 1500m and 3000m - groups are oftentimes combined depending on the number of contestants. Also, sometimes Youth and Intermediate contestants are combined if there are limited numbers of each.
Track Meets

The schedule is posted on our calendar and will be available as a download in the forms and downloads section of the member's area of the website.

SCYTFC Varsity Championships are for those individuals or relay teams who have met a qualifying standard. If the athlete meets a qualifying standard in any event, he or she must compete in the SCYTFC Varsity Championships and may not compete in the SCYTFC Junior Varsity Championships. Even if an athlete meets only one qualifying standard, and may therefore compete only in that event in the SCYTFC Varsity Championships, he or she may not compete in the SCYTFC Junior Varsity Championships in the other events for which he or she did not qualify for. The top four finishers in each event at the SCYTFC Varsity Championships then qualify to compete in the SCYTFC-VCYTC Co-Conference Championships. SCYTFC Junior Varsity Championships are the only finals for all other individuals who did not meet a qualifying standard during the season.

Awards

Ribbons: Ribbons will be awarded to each individual for every event contested through the whole season. Medals go to the top six finishers at League Finals and to the top six at IEC with ribbons to other places through 9th. At the Open Finals, ribbons go to all contestants in each heat, just as during the regular season, plus medals are awarded to the top 6 individuals based on time or distance from all the heats.

There are two awards that your athlete may qualify for:

1. Scholastic Award: given to athletes who achieved at least a 3.0 grade point average on their spring report cards. If your child qualifies for this certificate, it is your responsibility to bring a copy of your child’s report card to your coach.

2. Decathlete Award:

Gremlins: participating in 6 out of 7 events

Bantams: participating in 8 out of 10 events

Midgets thru Intermediate: participating in 10 out of 12 events
Coaching
All of our coaches are volunteers who want to give each child a positive experience. If there is ever any assistance you can provide, they will welcome your offer to help. If ever you have concerns about your child or the coaching in our program, please discuss it with the coach. If you are unable to resolve a matter with the coach, please talk to one of the Board Members. If you want to discuss it further, you may contact President Dimitri Lagos at: lagosdr@lattc.edu
